LEST WE FORGET 313 RANGER, Jean Baptiste WWI Jean was born on June 23, 1884 in St. Boniface, Manitoba. He enlisted with the Army in 1914 and served in England, France, and Germany until his discharge in 1918. He received the British War Medal, the Victory Medal and the Medaille Militaire. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Duck Lake Branch. Jean passed away in 1963. RAYMES, Daniel Francis WWII Daniel was born in Saskatoon on March 28, 1918. After graduating from Bedford Road Collegiate, he worked for the CNR. He enlisted in the RCAF on April 15, 1940, at the age of 22, and trained at Manning Depot in Toronto and Moose Jaw Flying School. His first solo flight occurred on June 5, 1940. Flying Officer Raymes also trained at Camp Borden and Patricia Bay. In six short months he went from his first solo flight in a Tiger Moth to becoming an operational pilot, protecting Canada’s east coast from German submarines, escorting convoys and performing search missions. He flew a number of Goose Bay-Reykjavik missions. On October 30, 1942, he and his crew sank a German U520 submarine. His last wartime trip took place on June 27, 1945. The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix reported: “Singled out for special mention after attacks on enemy submarines, Flying Officer D. F. ‘Danny’ Raymes is awarded the Air Force Cross.” Post-war, he was employed by Trans Canada Airlines (TCA), as well as moving to Jamaica in 1969 to help get fledgling Air Jamaica established. He married Lialla Henderson of Bounty in 1943. They had a son, Daniel. Daniel died on October 31, 1993. RANGER, Orville Lawrence WWII Orville was born in 1917 in Empress, Alberta, and grew up on a farm near Leask, Saskatchewan. He graduated from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan in 1942. He was sent overseas as an Officer in the Army that same year. He served in England, France, Holland and Belgium. He returned home in 1946 and resumed his career as a pharmacist working in Humboldt, Watson and Saskatoon until his retirement in 1974. He married Olga Prosko in 1995. Orville passed away in 2003.
