LEST WE FORGET 311 Arthur Charles Edward Ramshaw and Betty Doris Stichbury A Canadian Veteran and His War Bride Arthur was born in Nokomis, Saskatchewan, on February 18, 1918. He enlisted in the Canadian Army in the fall of 1940, at age 22, and went to Regina for training. In spring 1941, he was sent overseas where he survived ground action in Europe. Betty was born on August 18, 1925 in Bethnal Green, London, England. At the end of the war in 1945, they met at a dance in England and they married later that year at an Anglican Church in Thundersley on December 22, 1945. In spring 1946, Art was discharged from service and sent home. Betty came to Canada in August 1946 as a war bride on the ship “Aquitania”. She landed at Pier 21 and made the rest of her trip by train to Regina. Betty authored two books Eve’s Daughters and The Ragman. One of her first writings was “O Canada” which is placed at the War Museum in England. Betty loved painting and did some amazing portraits and landscapes. She learned the tailoring trade working in a factory during the war. Her greatest love was her husband Art, her family and extended family. Art received the French Medal for bravery and was knighted. He went to Chicago on his way back to visit his mother, Ida, and then came by train back to Canada. Art is a sixty-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 290 in Nokomis. Art received a birthday card from Queen Elizabeth for reaching his milestone 100th birthday in 2018. Betty passed away on September 25, 2019 at Manitou Lodge, Watrous, SK at the age of 94.
