LEST WE FORGET 291 PANCHYSHYN (GARINGER), Norma Luella WWII Norma was born on September 18,1924 on the family farm in Brooksby, Saskatchewan, to Norman and Luella Garinger. Her siblings were: Alfred, Harold, Kenneth Evan, Victor, Earl, Elmer, Helen and Cecil. She enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force (Women’s Division) in January 1943, took her basic training at RCAF Station Rockcliffe in Ontario, and served in clerical roles in Ottawa, attaining the rank of Corporal. She was discharged on April 30, 1946. After the war, Norma married Andrew Panchyshyn and they took up residence in Brooksby where Norma served as Postmaster for 34 years. Norma passed away on November 29, 2008. PARKER, Donald “Don” WWII Donald was born on December 6, 1924 in Saskatoon. He and his older brother, Eric (John James Fredrick), went to Caswell School and Saskatoon Technical Collegiate. In September 1943, he joined the Canadian Army at #12 District Depot, Regina, SK, and took Basic Artillery Training (Gunner) at Brandon. Don sailed for England on the British Troop ship, Andes, not in a Convoy. Ten days later they landed in Southampton on December 4, 1944. He was attached to 13 +2/14 Canadian Field Reg. In 1945, he went to Utrecht, Holland then Germany near Oldenburg, going from town to town rounding up German Prisoners of War; then to the navel barrack at Wilhelmshaven, releasing Germans back to civilian life. Due to sickness, he was sent to hospital near Brennan, then to 22nd General Hospital at Bramshott, England. On March 22, 1946, he left on hospital ship, Lady Rodney, for Canada. The screened top deck housed mental patients; second deck, pregnant English war brides; bottom deck was for wounded or sick soldiers. After about fourteen days at sea, they docked in Halifax, then took the hospital train to Regina. Don was discharged on May 1, 1946. He married and had three children. Don died on August 26, 2009 and is buried in Saskatoon Woodlawn Cemetery. PANTON, John William “Jack” WWII Jack was born in 1922 on a homestead near the South Saskatchewan River. He enlisted in the Navy in Saskatoon in February 1941 and served until September 1945. Jack started his family in Eatonia and then moved to Battleford. He worked as a mechanic and bus driver until his retirement. He joined the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 70 in Battleford where he was on the executive for several years. He transferred his membership to Eatonia and then North Battleford. Jack passed away at ninety years of age in 2013.
