LEST WE FORGET 241 John Alexander MacDonald and Elizabeth Mary Josephine Morris A Canadian Veteran and His War Bride John was born on June 10, 1910 in Star City, Saskatchewan, to John and Florence MacDonald. His siblings were: Catherine, William (who died in infancy), Norman, Douglas, Stanley, Hector and Florence. He enlisted in the Canadian Army on November 7, 1941 and served as a Sapper with the Royal Canadian Engineers in the United Kingdom, France and Northwestern Europe. Elizabeth, also known as Elsie, was born in Belfast, Ireland. John and Elsie married in October 1945 in Manchester, England. John received his discharge on January 24, 1946. Elsie left Southampton, England, on June 9, 1946 onboard the Queen Mary and arrived in Halifax, then on to Star City by train. John was employed as a grain buyer in Star City for a number of years. Upon his retirement, they moved to Saskatoon where he served with the Canadian Corps of Commissionaires. John passed away on January 23, 1992. Elsie passed away on November 13, 2019 at the age of 105.
