LEST WE FORGET 239 LOW, Donald Baird “Don” WWII Don was born in Foxwarren, Manitoba, on March 7, 1926. He joined the RCAF at the age of eighteen with the intention of becoming a pilot but was selected to train as a Wireless Gunner. He was later transferred to the Army and stationed in Toronto and Winnipeg. Upon his discharge on December 12, 1945 he returned to Foxwarren, where he courted Elaine, the love of his life. He worked as a mechanic and cabinet builder; started working for the CPR as an Assistant Agent in 1948; later becoming an Operator and Station Agent. The last sixteen years of his career included a move to Yorkton and a promotion to Mobile Supervisor, retiring in 1988 after forty years with the railway. Don was married to Elaine Thorpe in 1951 and they had two girls and two boys. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 77 and very proud to have received a seventy-year member pin. Don passed away on January 3, 2016. LUCAS, Norman Allan WWII Norman was born on January 4, 1925 in Assiniboia, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in 1942 and served with the Anti-Tank Regiment in England, France, Holland, Germany and Normandy. After returning to Canada, he worked in Kimberly for a short time before buying grain in Readlyn, Hardy and Goodwater, SK. He bought the general store in Goodwater and then sold the store in 1962, and moved to Regina where he joined The Royal Canadian Legion and worked for them and various other jobs. Norman passed away on December 23, 2006. LUCAS, John Arthur WWII John was born on April 11, 1918 in Readlyn, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army in 1940, training at Weyburn and Dundurn and then switched to the Air Force. He trained as an Aero-mechanic. He married five months before being posted to England on March 15, 1943. He was posted to several places but spent most of his time at “Topcliff” in Yorkshire. They repaired other planes but mainly Lancaster Bombers. In June 1945, he volunteered for service in the Pacific and was sent home on leave. The war ended before his service came up. John passed away in July 1989.
