LEST WE FORGET 207 JERSAK, Joseph WWII Joseph was born on February 18, 1922. Until he enlisted, most of Joseph Jersak’s life was spent on his family’s farm in the Glenside-Strongfield area. His parents, Joseph and Karoline (Puyman) Jersak, emigrated from Odessa, Russia in 1924 with their two children, Lydia and Joseph, age three. Five more children were born in Canada. Joseph served with the Canadian Highland Light Infantry in Holland and Belgium. Following the war, he purchased a farm in the Hawarden area. On a family visit to the USA in 1963, Joseph met Lois Meritt. They were married and lived in Uhrichsville, Ohio, where Joseph owned and operated Jersak Upholstering. He and Lois had two children, David and Janet Ann. He retired in 1989 and died from a heart attack on September 7, 1991. JOHNSON, Harry Gutbrandr O. WWI Harry was born on September 5, 1889 at Churchbridge, NWT (now Saskatchewan). He was a member of the Winnipeg Police Force for a number of years before attending Wesley College to train as a teacher. When World War I broke out, he enlisted in a unique branch of the services, the 223rd Battalion (Canadian Scandinavians) based in Winnipeg. He served as a Recruiting Sergeant until he contracted rheumatic fever which damaged his heart. Harry was given an honourable medical discharge, after which he worked as an elevator agent. He married Mary Ellen Coward in 1929. Harry was a lifelong outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, and was also an avid curler and sports fan. He died at age 86 on February 29, 1976 and is buried in the Glenside Cemetery alongside his wife Mary. JOHNSON, Arnold Valentine WWII Arnold was born on August 10, 1913 in Dubuc, Saskatchewan. He lived in the Whitewood area until 1928 when he homesteaded in the Snowden area. In 1942, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces and saw active duty in Europe. He was discharged in June 1946 and received the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Victory and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Phyllis in 1946 and they raised four children. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Snowden Branch 205 for 34 years. Arnold passed away on June 27, 1993.
