LEST WE FORGET 185 HEARN, William John “Red” WWII John was born in Central Butte, Saskatchewan, on March 25, 1923 and grew up in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and was posted to the RCAF Air Training Base in Moose Jaw as an Air Engine Mechanic. He was then posted to No.5 Manning Depot in Lachine, Quebec, then to St. Thomas, Ontario, and finished his tour of duty at Boundary Bay, British Columbia, until the conclusion of World War II. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, General Service Medal and Clasp and RCAF Medal. John took a bookkeeping course in Vancouver after the war and then decided to return to his hometown of Moose Jaw to work for the CPR Express. He moved to Weyburn, Saskatchewan, in 1953 and became a sheet metal fabricator and plumber. He married Lil Dudar in 1956 and they settled and started a family in Weyburn where he still lives today. HEGEDUS, Alex WWII Alex was born on March 23, 1917 in Kipling, Saskatchewan. He was called to serve his country leaving behind his young widowed mother and young siblings to carry on their own. He served in England, France, Germany, Holland and Belgium as a Private.While on the front line, his life was narrowly spared twice; first his helmet was pierced by a bullet, burning his hair. The second occurred in the trenches when his pant legs were burned. It was a very happy day when he and the other Veterans boarded the boat to return to Canada. Alex passed away in 2002. HEGAN, T. George WWII George volunteered into service with the Indian Head Artillery in 1940. He had earned the rank of L/Sgt. by the time they mobilized to England. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, France and Holland with the Canadian 5th Armored Division. He earned three campaign stars. Upon demobilization he used his military service credits to study pharmacy at the University of Saskatchewan. He took his first professional employment in Regina where he continued serving with the local militia artillery regiment. George passed away in September 2006.
