LEST WE FORGET 183 HAWRYLUK, William WWII William was born on April 10, 1918. He enrolled with the Army on August 29, 1941 at the age of 23. He served with the Rocky Mountain Rangers and the Oxford Rifles Regiments in United Kingdom, North Pacific area and Continental Europe. He was discharged on March 9, 1946 at age 27. He was awarded the France and Germany Star. William passed away on June 5, 1983 at the age of 65. HEAD, Perry William WWII Perry was born in 1923 in Polwarth, Saskatchewan, the son of William and Delia Head. He became engaged prior to leaving for combat. In the last week of September 1944, the Allies held the city of Antwerp, but the Germans held both shores of the Scheldt estuary, so that the port of Antwerp could not be used. The task of clearing the southern shore of the estuary was allotted to the 3rd Canadian Division, aided by the 4th Canadian Armoured Division and the 52nd Division. Their operations lasted from October until the beginning of November 1944; by November 3, the Germans had been cleared from the northwest corner of Belgium and the south shore of Scheldt was free. There had been fierce fighting for two weeks with the crossing of the Leopold Canal. Perry died on October 15, 1944 at the age of 21. He is buried at the Adegem Canadian War Cemetery in Belgium. Family members visited his graveside in 2016. HAYES, William Lucas WWI William was born in 1888 in Oswestry, England. He enlisted with the Army and served with the 28th Battalion CEF in Europe. On October 11, 1918 during an attack, his company came under severe fire, and all the officers were killed or wounded. Although he was wounded, he took up command and when the advance was held up by an enemy machine-gun post in a house, he crept forward alone and bombed the house, rushing the post and killing the entire garrison. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 8 for fifty years. William passed away in 1959.
