LEST WE FORGET 179 HARRINGTON, John “Jack” WWII John was born in Outlook, SK, on August 31, 1921, the son of John and Winnifred Norah Harrington of Glenside. His father was a World War I Veteran and recipient of the Military Medal. After initial training in Mossbank, he served as an RAF Rear Gunner in the Short Stirling Pathfinder 7th Squadron, engaging in numerous raids and sorties over land and sea in Northern and Western Europe. His plane was reported missing in action off the coast of East Anglia on June 12, 1943. Despite a thorough land and sea search, no trace was ever found. Warrant Officer Harrington is commemorated at Runnymede War Cemetery near London, England, a memorial for airmen who died with no known grave. HARRINGTON, William WWII William was born in 1919, the son of William and Jessie Fraser Harrington of Glenside. He enlisted in June 1940 with the Saskatoon Light Infantry and was sent overseas in August. He took part in the invasion of Sicily and later in Ortona, Italy. He and 25 of his comrades were ambushed in a hail of gunfire near the City Hall. They sought shelter in a nearby building where they all died at the hands of the German Army on December 29, 1943. William was just 24 years old. He is buried at Moro Canadian War Cemetery, San Donato, near Ortona. HARRINGTON, John WWI John was born at Beckermet, Cumberland, England, on October 4, 1882. He joined the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force on December 25, 1915. John Harrington served with the 46th Saskatchewan Regiment, the 10th Brigade Division and the 128th Battalion at Passchendaele. He suffered from ‘trench foot,’ a condition that was to plague him for the remainder of his life. John Harrington was awarded the Military Medal, which his family still treasures. Following the war, John returned to the Glenside area where he was known for his community-mindedness, serving the Municipality of Rudy council for thirteen years both as a councillor and reeve. He passed away on March 12, 1963 and is buried in the Glenside cemetery.
