LEST WE FORGET 175 GUSHULAK, William George WWII William was born in 1916 in Drobot, Saskatchewan. He enlisted with the RCAF in December 1941. He trained in Range Direction Finding; Electronics; Radio and Radar in Edmonton, Saskatoon, Clinton and Toronto. From Halifax, he sailed along with many military personnel. He sailed in a convoy aboard “The Lady Rodney” on rough seas for Torbay, NL. He was there from December 1942 until June 1945 when he was posted to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. He was President of the Foam Lake Legion Branch from 1976 to 1978 and a member for 54 years. William passed away on July 6, 2004. HARDIE, Willis WWII Willis was born in Kandahar, Saskatchewan, on April 9, 1921. He enlisted in the Army on July 30, 1943. He worked on the family farm prior to his second try for enlistment in Regina having been rejected in Saskatoon due to a heart condition. He served in World War II with the Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, Regina Rifles, Unit 8 in England, France and Germany. He was killed in action at the Falaise Gap on August 8, 1944 by enemy sniper. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Defence Medal, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. The Memorial Cross was given to his mother, Lydia Hardie. HALLIWELL, John Rudolph WWII John Rudolph Halliwell served Canada with the 18th Armoured Car Regiment and the 12th Manitoba Dragoons. Having already enlisted, he married Muriel Vincent of Ardath on November 8, 1941, before being deployed overseas. He served in the Army from the spring of 1941 until the fall of 1945. During that time, he saw action in France, Holland and Belgium. He was in Germany the day the war ended, and returned to Canada in October 1945. Rudolph and Muriel farmed in the Ardath area where they raised their four children: Louisa, Janet, John and Trudy. The couple retired to Outlook in 1979 and enjoyed 21 years with each other and family members before John passed away on October 15, 2000, at the age of 84.
