LEST WE FORGET 169 GREENWOOD, Malcolm Bennett WWII Malcolm was born in 1922. He joined the Navy on August 11, 1941 at age eighteen at HMCS Saskatoon, as it was known at that time (an old Ford Garage). He served on the west coast on HMCS Prince Robert, an Auxiliary Cruiser, which formally had been a CNR passenger ship. Malcolm was sent overseas in May 1943 on HM Transport Andes and helped commission HMCS Gatineau, a river class destroyer, in Liverpool, England. When the refit was completed, he went on North Atlantic convoy duty. He was transferred to HMCS Edmundston and later to the HMCS Nanaimo in Esquimalt, BC, where he became Gunnery Instructor. He was discharged from the Navy on October 29, 1945 as Acting Leading Seaman. Malcolm passed away in 2010. GRINDLE, Clifford Morton WWI Clifford Morton Grindle, son of Arnold and Ella Grindle, was born on March 10, 1922 in Macrorie. His parents arrived in the area in 1913 where they farmed and ran the local hotel. Clifford was working as a well driller when he enlisted in Regina on January 5, 1943. He served with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment. He was killed at Wouwse Plantage on October 24, 1944 at age 22. His regiment was part of a fierce assault that successfully drove the German army from the Scheldt and allowed the Allies access to the vital port at Antwerp. He is buried in the Bergen-op-Zoom Canadian War Cemetery in Holland. GREER, Malcolm Bruce WWI Malcolm was born on March 11, 1897 at Walter Falls, Ontario. Shortly before World War I, he moved west with his parents Samuel and Margaret Greer and brothers Harry and Gordon to the Hawarden area. He listed Broderick as his address when he enlisted in the 197th Overseas Battalion in Winnipeg on June 14, 1916 at age nineteen. He served with the 2nd CE Battalion in Canada (twelve months), England (five months) and France (one year, six months) until cessation of hostilities in 1918. In 1921, he married Norma Saugstad in Broderick and they had two children: Doug and Pauline. Malcolm worked in the Broderick General Store as well as serving as Postmaster until he and Norma moved to Vancouver in 1943 where they continued to operate small corner grocery stores. Malcolm passed away in 1958.
