LEST WE FORGET 163 GOLLMER, Harold William WWII Harold William Gollmer was born on May 9, 1911 in Temiskaming, Ontario, son of Rev. Alfred William and Mrs. Alice Mary Gollmer, who moved to Outlook where Harold became an active member of the Outlook Boys Scouts and St. Mark’s Anglican Sunday School. In May of 1940, on his 18th birthday, he left home to join the Royal Canadian Navy. He saw service aboard HMCS Skeena which protected convoys of Allied vessels from German submarines in the Atlantic Ocean. He obtained the rank of Leading Seaman. He and Jean Evelyn Nichol married on July 31, 1945. The couple had three sons: David, James and George. Harold ended his career with the Navy as a photographer. The family moved to Victoria where Jean worked as a nurse and Harold obtained employment with the Victoria Police Department before taking a job with DND as a fire fighter. In retirement, he enjoyed camping, fishing and woodworking. He died on May 23, 2019 in Victoria. GRAPKO, Peter WWII Peter was born in 1920 in Usherville, Saskatchewan. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as an Air Frame Mechanic on the West Coast of Canada. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Gull Lake Branch. Peter passed away in 1963. GOLLMER, Mary Irene Eleanor WWII Mary Irene Eleanor Gollmer was born on August 11, 1920 in Ontario. She moved to Outlook with her family when her father, Rev. Alfred Gollmer, became the minister at St. Mark’s Anglican Church in 1936. Active in the community, she taught Girl Guides and Brownies as well as Sunday School. She was working as a secretary when World War II broke out. Mary enlisted in the RCAF Women’s Division as a stenographer. During the war, she travelled to Saskatchewan towns working as a recruiter for the RCAF (Girls in Uniform). Mary and her husband, John Anderson, had six children: James, Betty, Ken, Marjorie, Don and Jennifer. Mary also taught at the Reliance College of Business in Regina. In retirement, she lived at Lakewood Manor in Regina where she died on January 7, 2007.
