LEST WE FORGET 155 GETTIS, Robert M. PEACETIME Robert was born in Govan, Saskatchewan, in 1928. He served with 408 Squadron of the RCAF in Canada. He was the technician in charge of Shoran Geodetic Station in Northwest Territories. There is a lake called Gettis Lake (73° 32’ N, 120° 25’) in memory of Robert on Banks Bow Island. Robert passed away in 1959. GILBERT, Edward James WWI Edward was born in Petrolia, Ontario, on December 15, 1889 to Carleton and Annie Jane Gilbert. His parents, originally from England, moved from Ontario to homestead near Bratton in 1906. Edward was attending Regina College when he enlisted in Regina on March 9, 1916 with the 203rd Overseas Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. He served in the Signal Pool in France. Edward was also a member of the Signal Company Concert Party, one of about thirty troupes that entertained front line soldiers in France. The Canadian War Museum reports that by the Battle of the Somme in 1916, military authorities were encouraging and organizing concert parties for the soldiers during their periods of rest. By war’s end, almost every division had its own entertainment troupe, as well as performers in many of the units and formations. Soldiers were entertained by songs, skits, and cross-dressing vaudeville acts. Edward arrived home in Halifax on June 13, 1919 and was discharged on June 16, 1919. GETTIS, William WWII William was born in Govan, Saskatchewan, in 1926. He served in the Air Force during World War II.William has been a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 108 in Semans, Saskatchewan.
