LEST WE FORGET 151 GEORGE, Albert Ronald WWII Albert was born in May 1910 on the homestead in Willow Bunch, Saskatchewan. In 1942, Albert joined the Army and served overseas with the Perth Regiment. He was killed in action in northern Italy on December 10, 1944 at the Senio River. For most casualties, this is their second grave having been recommitted from a battlefield site to a Commonwealth Cemetery after the end of World War II. His memorial headstone reads “Greater Love Hath No Man Than This - That A Man Lay Down His Life For His Friends”. His eternal rest is Plot 6 Row E Grave 5. Ravenna was taken by the Canadians in December 1944 and many burials reflect the fighting for the Senio Line. Following the fall of Rome to the Allies in June 1944, a series of successive stands were made by the retreating Germans. The cemetery’s location is Lat.44.441525 Long.12.l07673. It is open permanently and may be visited at any time. GERMAN, Bernard Steven SPECIAL DUTY AREA Bernard was born in Kerrobert in 1937. He enrolled in the Royal Canadian Air Force on October 12, 1955. He took his basic training at Saint-Jean RCAF station in Quebec and at Camp Borden in Ontario. He signed up for three years initially but signed up for an indefinite period in 1965. His first posting after training was to RCAF Station Saskatoon (406 Squadron) in 1956. His next posting was to RCAF Station Rockcliffe in 1961. Next, he was posted to CFB Station Rivers in 1964, CFB Portage la Prairie in 1970 and CFB Comox in 1977. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal on October 1, 1966; to Master Corporal on May 1, 1973; and to Sergeant on June 8, 1978. Bernard died of a heart attack on November 1, 1979, in his last year prior to retirement. He was awarded the Canadian Forces’ Decoration and Bar for his years of service. He was an Aero-engine Technician. He didn’t serve overseas. The closest he came was in 1959 when he was part of a crew that ferried a fleet of expeditors over to our bases in Germany and spent a short time in the Azores. He was always willing to support his fellow servicemen to the point of counselling them in a difficult situation. GERMAN, Beanus Michael WWII Beanus was born in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, in 1919 and grew up on a farm in the Luseland District. He enlisted in Regina on April 9, 1942 and was discharged on February 4, 1945. According to the Canadian Pension document, the reason for discharge was due to Bronchial Asthma which pre-existed prior to his enlisting. He injured his back in the army when he rolled a jeep. Beanus’ rank was Private and served as Infantry Rifleman. He took basic training in Dundurn, SK, and served in Nanaimo, BC. Beanus passed away in 1984.
