LEST WE FORGET 149 GARUK, Michael Murray WWII Michael was born in 1924 in Arran, Saskatchewan. He served with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve as Able Seaman onboard HMS Huron duringWorldWar II. He belonged to the Flin Flon Branch of The Royal Canadian Legion in Manitoba. After the war, he dedicated his time to his family and the Flin Flon community. Besides being a volunteer of the Flin Flon Fire Department, he was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners of North America. Michael passed away on April 15, 1992. GENT, Robert Frederick WWII Robert was born in 1924 in Halbrite, Saskatchewan. He joined the Army with the Royal Winnipeg Rifles on December 2, 1942. He took his training in Shellbrook, Quebec, and Camp Borden in Ontario. He embarked for England on April 29, 1944. While in England, he trained women for ambulance drivers. He left for Belgium on October 6, 1944 and was wounded on February 21, 1945 in Reichwald Forest. He returned to Canada and was discharged on November 24, 1945. He married Sylvia Colvin in December 1947 and they raised six children. Robert passed away on January 1, 2007. GAVEL, Lemuel Hobbs WWI Lemuel Hobbs Gavel was born to Solomon Ryder and Martha Lavina Gavel at Argyle Head, Nova Scotia, on July 25, 1885. Married to Jean Cunningham McLeod, they had two children: Lillian and Murray. Before World War I, Lemuel moved westward to work with the CPR in Moose Jaw. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in Winnipeg on December 16, 1914, seeing action with the 32nd Battalion in France. He received his discharge on March 29, 1919 and continued working with the CPR in Moose Jaw. He transferred to Outlook in January of 1928 and served as an engineer until his retirement in 1951. Their children grew up in Outlook. Jean died in 1971 at the age of eighty. Lemuel Hobbs Gavel died on June 14, 1988 in Regina at the age of 102.
