The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 75 CAVE, Roger SECOND BOER WAR Roger was born in Swinford, England on June 3, 1890. He enlisted in the British Army in 1904 at the age of fourteen. He served in India, Afghanistan and Pakistan under Lord Kitchener in the Second Boer War from 1904 to his discharge in 1911. He immigrated to Canada in 1914 and was a homesteader in Saskatchewan. He worked many jobs and lived in many towns. He and his Irish wife raised four children. He was a longtime Legion member of Simpson and Melville Branches. Roger passed away on May 28, 1980 in his nineteenth year in Melville, SK. CHAPLIN, Charles Montague WWI Charles was born in Leystone, England on June 25, 1882. Working as an Agent and being with an active militia (1st Suffolk & Harwich Royal Garrison Artillery), he enlisted in the Army in Lumsden on November 19, 1915. Serving with Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry, he was given commission to 2LT with the British Army on June 27, 1917. He was killed in action on September 26, 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial near Ypres, Belgium. CHING, Duncan WWI Duncan was born on March 4, 1897 in Huron, Ontario to William Ching and Charlotte McCallum. His siblings were William Jr., Florence, Albert and Clarence. The family moved midway between Alameda and Frobisher in 1904. After serving in the Canadian Army during the First World War, Duncan and his wife, Verna Billington from Hirsch, farmed on land adjacent to the Mayflower School until they moved to Alberta in the late 1930s. They returned to Saskatchewan in 1977 and resided in Creighton Lodge in Estevan. Duncan passed away on May 16, 1979. Both Duncan and Verna are buried in Estevan.
