The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 63 BROWN, David Oscar WWII David was born in Rose Plain, Saskatchewan on July 19, 1914. He was working as a teacher in Regina. He enlisted in the Air Force on May 15, 1942. He was a Flying Officer on a Lancaster aircraft as a navigator. He served with the No 514 Squadron during the Second World War. He was killed in action on July 21, 1944. He is buried at Hunsel Roman Catholic Churchyard in Limburg, Netherlands. BROWNFIELD, Oscar David WWII Oscar was born in Big River, Saskatchewan on September 6, 1912. Aircraftman First Class Brownfield enlisted in the Air Force in Saskatoon during the Second World War. He died on June 10, 1940 on the same Hudson flight as National Defence Minister Norman Rogers. The plane went down at Newcastle, Ontario. Only four men were on the flight. He is buried in his hometown of Big River, SK. BUCHANAN, Harry Edward WWI Harry was born on August 30, 1894 to Archibald and Barbara Louise (McLiesh) in Walhalla, North Dakota. On June 6, 1901 his parents, Harry and sister Daisy arrived in Alameda in Cateville to find the ground white with snow. Their belongings consisted of furniture, two horses, a cow, a walking plow, a six-foot disc and some harrows. Fire was only one of the drawbacks in the early years. There was also hail, frost and one year an early snowstorm. More siblings were born, Bertrand, Marjorie, Inez and Lyla. School was a problem for a while. Harry went to school in Rockland for a time but in 1908, Cateville School was opened. He enlisted in June 1916 in the 152nd Battalion and went in training at Camp Hughes now Shilo. He had a short harvest leave and when it was over was posted overseas. After some time in the lines with the Infantry, he was transferred to the Engineers and ran a gasoline engine on a narrow gauge railway bringing in ammunitions and supplies. He served in this department until the end of the war. He was gassed and hospitalized for a time. Harry was discharged in April 1919. He returned home in the spring and started farming again. Harry married Gertrude Hatchard in 1922 and they had two children, Evelyn and Ronald. Harry and Gertrude parted and Harry married Evelyn Jackson and they bought a farm in the Mayflower district. Harry passed away on May 1952 at the age of 58 and is buried in Alameda Cemetery.
