He enlisted in the Army on August 12, 1914 with his twin brother; they were sent to Valcartier, Quebec to fully enlist and were sworn in on September 18 of that year. He was discharged from Canadian service upon receiving a Commission with the British Army on February 24, 1915. He served with the South Waleb Borderers, the 5th Bn Infantry Brigade and the Royal Devonshire Regiment during the First World War.
