The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 367 WASSIL, Bernard WWII Bernard was born in 1926 in Melville, SK. He moved to Armley with his parents in 1930, and then in 1936 to Zenon Park. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve on May 20, 1944 and served as a Mechanic in Canada until his discharge on January 31, 1946. He married and raised a family of seven children and he moved to Yorkton to work for the Saskatchewan Government. Bernard passed away on March 5, 2003. WASSIL, Matthew WWII Matthew was born in 1925 in Melville, SK. He moved to Armley with his parents in 1930, and then in 1936 to Zenon Park. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 15, 1943 and served as an Instrument Mechanic in Canada until his discharge on December 28, 1944. After the war he married and moved to Regina and taught Business Education at the University of Regina. He and his wife raised three sons. Matthew passed away in 1987. WATSON, Harold “Harry” WWII Harry was born on June 5, 1923 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. At eighteen years of age, he joined the professional hockey ranks with the Brooklyn Americans (1942/43) of the National Hockey League (NHL). After one year, the Detroit Red Wings claimed him, but then the Royal Canadian Air Force interrupted his career. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1943 to 1945. By the time Harry retired from hockey in 1958, he had played left wing for the Detroit Red Wings, Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Chicago Blackhawks. He had also played on five Stanley Cup winning teams (1943, 1947, 1948, 1949 and 1951). Harry finished his career with 236 goals, and 207 assists, in 809 games. In 1948, he led the Leafs with 26 goals and no penalty minutes. Upon retirement, Harry was in the NHL’s top 15 All-Time scorers.
