The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 341 THOMPSON, Walter “Jack” WWII Jack was born on September 21, 1912 in Kelwood, Manitoba. He moved with his parents to Pleasantdale, SK. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Engineers in 1939 and served in Canada, England, France, Germany, Holland, and Belgium until his discharge in January of 1945. He married Myrtle Pendleton and in 1948 they moved out to the homestead. They finally went to Arborfield and there they raised a family of eight children. Jack passed away on October 24, 1981. THOMSON, Earl “Tommy” WWI Earl was born in Birch Hills, Saskatchewan on April 19, 1892. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force in 1916. He was regarded as one of the finest hurdlers in North America. Internationally he had twice set world records with 110-metre hurdles in 1915 and 1919. Earl qualified for the 110-metre hurdles and long jump in the 1920 Olympic Games in Belgium. He won gold in hurdles equaling his own record time of 14.8 seconds, setting a new Olympic and world record that stood for eleven years. He was the fourth Canadian to win an Olympic Track and Field Championship since the start of the modern games in 1896. After the games, Earl returned to Dartmouth College where he won three USA Inter-Collegiate Hurdles Championships. He also had a distinguished seventeen-year coaching career at the US Naval Academy in Maryland. THORBURN, James Henry Walter WWII James was born in 1906 in Maymont, SK. He enlisted with the Prince Albert Volunteers on May 18, 1942. He later joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment and served in Canada and England as a Driver for officers, ambulance, trucks and troops until his discharge on December 19th, 1945. James passed away in 1987.
