The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 311 STANGER, Gordon Thomas WWII Gordon was born on March 3, 1924 in Indian Head, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force Flying Officer Squadron 424 in September of 1942 He trained as a navigator in Portage la Prairie and was sent over to England in 1944 serving at Wigtown, Ossington, Wombleton and Skipton-on-Swale. He also served in France, and Germany until his discharge. When the war ended Squadron 424 stayed in England, making several trips to Italy to bring soldiers back. Gordon passed away on September 12, 1984. STANIOWSKI, Edward “Ed” PEACETIME Ed was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on July 7, 1955. After growing up in Moose Jaw, SK, where he played much of his minor hockey, Ed moved to Regina to become the goaltender for the Regina Pats Juniors from 1971 to 1975. His outstanding junior hockey career resulted in him being named the Pats’ most valuable player in 1973, 1974, and 1975. During his tenure with the Pats, Ed established records for the best goals against average, most shutouts, most games played, and the most saves by a goalie. In 1974 and 1975, he was named the Western Canada Junior Hockey League’s (WCJHL) most valuable player and led the Pats to their third Memorial Cup in the 1973/74 seasons. Ed joined Canada’s military following the completion of his hockey career and has advanced to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel. His military duties have seen Ed in a peacekeeping role in Cyprus, Croatia, and Bosnia. STANLEY, Alfred WWII Alfred was born in Pendennis, Manitoba. He moved to Saskatchewan in 1932 and married and had two children. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Artillery on July 21, 1941. He served in Canada and England until his discharge in 1946. He lived in Ontario for almost 35 years after the war. Alfred passed away in 1978.
