The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 301 SMITH, Robert Edward “Ed” WWII Ed was born in June 1922 at Lloydminster, Saskatchewan. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942 at Saskatoon. After training, Ed arrived overseas with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals and by July 1944, he was in France with the 2nd Canadian Division HQ. Ed worked with telephones, radios and wireless sets, keeping the lines of communication open with the three army brigades in the division. Ed saw service in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany during the Second World War. He was released in 1946 and awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He settled in North Battleford and worked as an accountant at a car dealership. He then worked at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Battleford as a Deputy Sheriff/Deputy Registrar and retired in 1987. Ed currently lives in North Battleford, where he has been a member of Legion Branch 70 for approximately seventy years. SMITH, Wesley Hubert “Wes” WWII Wesley was born in Francis, Saskatchewan in 1913 and grew up on a farm. In 1939 at the age of 26 he joined the Canadian Army serving with the 49th Edmonton Regiment 1St Canadian Division during the Second World War. He served in Sicily, Italy and Northwest Europe. When in England he met and married a factory worker Maria Prelog in 1943. Wes was a radio operator with the “Eddies” all through the Italy campaign and then to North West Europe. He was awarded the 19391945 Star, the Italy Star, the France and Germany Star, the Defence Medal, the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp and the War Medal 1939-1945. He was also Mentioned in Dispatches for distinguished service. Wes was a very community-minded person as well as being active with Unity Legion Branch 90. Wes passed away in 1976. SMITH, Wilfred WWII Wilfred was born in 1890. He moved his wife and two children to the Arborfield area in 1931 from Wilcox. He purchased land near Connell Creek where he farmed for years. He enlisted with the Royal Canadian Air Force on September 5, 1941 and served with Service Police in Canada until his discharge on March 11, 1946. After the war he continued to farm. Wilfred passed away in August of 1973.
