The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 287 SERVATIUS, John Raymond WWII John was born in 1914 in Melrose, Minnesota. He immigrated to Canada with his parents in 1920. He enlisted with the Canadian Army when the Second World War broke out. In September of 1944 he was wounded in action in France. A piece of shrapnel went into his stomach and he spent the next several months in hospitals and returned home to Canada on January 25th, 1945. He was discharged from the Army on May 25, 1945 and was awarded four medals. John passed away on March 18, 1984. SHARP, Harry WWI & WWII Harry was born in April 1898 in Ontario. In 1900, at the age of two he moved with his family to a farm in Frobisher. In 1909, he moved into town where Harry completed Grades 1 to 8 by the age of eleven. He completed high school at Oxbow by age fourteen. He enlisted in the 52nd Regiment of the 3rd Division and served for three and a half years in the First World War. He also served for four and a half years in the Second World War. Army life did much to instill in Harry the necessity of leadership, team work and discipline. In addition, he acquired a love of fair play and respect for his fellowman. The wars were major events in Harry’s life. During the hard years of the Second World War, his rise through the ranks was nothing short of phenomenal. Between 1939 and 1945, he rose to the rank of brigadier-general. After the war, he again became a colonel during which time he commanded the Regina Rifles. Harry recalled with pride that these troops were the first to land on the shores of France on D-Day. Between 1919 and 1923 he attended university and also taught in country schools. He was awarded his degree at the age of 25, after which he was appointed to the position of principal at the North Battleford Collegiate. Harry married Doris McCarthy and was blessed with four children: Tom, Jack, Mary and Joan. On February 19, 1963 Harry retired after forty years. SHAW, Alvie Greet WWII Alvie was born on June 24, 1918 in the Saline Creek District, north of Semans, Saskatchewan. He was the oldest son of James (Jake) and Gladys Shaw. He was a private in the South Saskatchewan Regiment Canadian Army during the Second World War. He was discharged due to medical reasons. He married Mary Cowling of Semans on October 24, 1942. They made their home in Semans where they raised a daughter and a son. Alvie worked for farmers and then ran the dray. In 1949, he was hired as Town Maintenance man until his passing on February 12, 1974.
