The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 237 PETIT, Claude Claude was born in Duck Lake, Saskatchewan on October 31, 1935. He is not only a distinguished serviceman, serving with the Armed Forces from 1951 to 1966, and athlete, but also a role model for the First Nations community. Claude kept his focus on Saskatchewan boxing circles, quickly becoming well known within them. Youth in Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, IIe-a-La Crosse, Green Lake and Meadow Lake all benefited from his boxing clubs. A veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces and a member of the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry, Petit was a five-time Canadian Army heavyweight boxing champion (1958-1963). In 1964, he became the only Canadian to win the British Army Heavyweight Boxing Championship. His military in-ring accomplishments earned him a place on the Canadian Forces Sports Hall of Fame Honour Roll. PHILLIPS, James “Leslie” WWII Leslie was born on April 8, 1919 in the Tate, Saskatchewan District. He was the son of Alsworth (Allie) and Laura Phillips. He attended School at Tate, SK. Leslie was a gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery 24th Field Regiment during the Second World War. Leslie married Edna Shaw on September 15, 1941. Edna travelled with Leslie to various places where he was stationed. Their first son was born in Winnipeg in 1942. Their second son was born in Vernon in 1945. He was also stationed at Wainwright. After his discharge, they purchased a farm in Semans and in 1947 a daughter was born. Leslie continued farming until 1983 when ill health forced him to quit. He passed away on March 26, 1984. He was a member of Legion Branch 108. POPP, Miles M. WWII, SPECIAL DUTY AREA & PEACETIME Miles was born in Truax, Saskatchewan in 1928 and was raised in the Smoky Ridge area. As a teenager, Miles did some cowboy work near Seabee, Alberta in the early 1940s. In 1943, he went back home and enlisted with the Prince Albert Volunteers and later transferred to the 16/22nd Saskatchewan Horse. He served until 1946 and upon being discharged from the Army he went to work for the Canadian National Railway. In 1954, he married and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. He served in many air bases in Western Canada, most notably in Cold Lake, Alberta; Whitehorse, Yukon Territory and Alert, NWT. He was honourably discharged in 1969. He was awarded the Canadian Special Services Medal with Alert Bar, Canada 125 Medal and the Canadian Decoration. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Whitehorse, YT and Pincher Creek, Alberta. Miles passed away in 2014.
