PENFOLD, Bert WWI Bert was born in Newport, Isle of Wight, UK on August 14, 1897. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He dedicated his life to the promotion of figure skating at the national, regional, provincial, and local level. Bert was chairman of the Western Section of the Canadian Figure Skating Association (CFSA) for fifteen years, and served as judges’ chairman for many years. He was chairman for the first Western Canadian Figure Skating Championships, the North American Figure Skating Championships in 1955, and the Canadian Figure Skating Championships held in 1965. In 1967, Bert received the Centennial Medal and was appointed to represent the Canadian Figure Skating Association at the World Figure Skating Championships. Bert was an international figure skating judge for many years. PETERSEN, Arnold Sofus WWI Arnold was born in Horesens, Denmark in 1891. He served two years in the Jutland Rifles in Denmark prior to moving to Canada. Upon arrival, he began homesteading in the Carlea are near Nippawin, SK. He enlisted in the Military on May 15, 1915 in Prince Albert, SK. He served with the 53rd Battalion, 2nd Canadian Mounted Rifles in Belgium, France and England during the First World War. On December 25, 1916 in Arras, France, he was injured from shrapnel to the left leg. After surgery and some recovery time he returned to service, remaining in England. He was discharged upon demobilization on February 12, 1919. Arnold passed away in 1973.
