The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 229 ORBAN, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Regina, Saskatchewan on April 21, 1922. While growing up in Regina, he participated in a wide variety of sports. In high school he starred in hockey, football, boxing and athletics. He continued with these throughout his academic career enjoying football, hockey, and boxing at the senior levels in Canada. He served with the Royal Canadian Navy Volunteer Reserve from 1942 to 1945. Bill was the first Canadian to obtain a PhD in Exercise Physiology and while working on this degree became involved in the testing of world-class athletes. He was employed by the Canadian Department of Defense where he developed the famous “5 BX” (Five Basic Exercises) fitness program that proved to be one of the most popular fitness regimens ever developed with over 23 million copies sold worldwide. Soon after this success, Bill went to the University of Saskatchewan as the Director of the School of Physical Education. In 1963, he became associated with a very successful longitudinal study on Child Growth and Development in which a randomly selected group of boys in Saskatoon was followed and studied for ten years. Bill moved to the University of Ottawa in 1966 as Professor and Dean of the School of Physical Education. In 1967, he worked with the Medical Research Team at the Winnipeg Pan-American Games and acted on the Advisory Committee of the National Hockey League. He maintained a steady involvement with the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation (CAPHER) throughout his academic career and reached the level of president by 1971. PACHOLKA (MORAN), Pamela WWII Pamela was born in Croyton, England in 1923. She was a nurse then joined the Royal Air Force during the Second World War where she trained as a meteorologist and met Wally. They were married in 1944 and raised five children. After Wally’s retirement, Pan and Wally became passionately involved in the Liberal Party during the Chrétien years, Wally more so than Pam. They also spent much of their spare time travelling. Pamela died on January 16, 2005 at St. Annes Veterans Hospital. She is buried at the Field of Honour in Point Claire, Quebec. PACHOLKA, Walter “Wally” WWII Wally was born on March 8, 1919 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. He moved to Montreal where he worked at Nordyne Aviation, now Bombardier. In 1942, he joined the Royal Air Force where he flew as a navigator on decoy missions accompanying bombers. He served in Europe during the Second World War. He met Pamela Moran and they were married in 1944. In 1945, he continued in the AF where he would fly C119’s and F100’s rising to the rank of S/L 402 in Winnipeg, EWU in St. Hubert, and as a CO in Royal Canadian Air Force Stn. Winisk. He spent time in Texas and three years in Metz, France. He completed 55 missions and left the Air Force. He did Flight Instruction with Air Canada. In 1981, after doing some work in Jamaica and Sri Lanka, he retired. He became passionately involved with the Liberal Party in Chrétien years. Wally died on July 25, 2014 at St. Anne’s Veterans Hospital in Montreal. He is buried at the Field of Honour in Pointe Claire, Quebec by his wife.
