The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 219 NEEDHAM, Thomas Francis WWII Thomas was born in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan on August 11, 1922, a younger brother to three sisters. Frank served in the Second World War from 1941 to 1945 in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Rear Gunner. During his first mission his plane was shot down over Husselhanaal, Holland on September 13, 1942. The remainder of the war was spent in a German POW camp Stalag VII. In 1945, Frank, along other POWs, walked across Germany during the winter months ending up in an American Hospital in Germany. Later he was sent to England. Frank returned to Unity, married Josephine Needham in 1946. He went to work for the power plant and when opportunity came along he worked for Sask Power, the gas department, taking a transfer to Prince Albert with his wife and daughters Myra and Helen. Later, they moved to Estevan and he became very involved in the horse community. Frank passed away in 1975 from a liver condition caused from malnutrition from time spent as a POW. He was buried on Remembrance Day. He was a member of the Unity Legion Branch. NELSON, Leonard Glen “Len” WWII Len was born in Appleton, Minnesota in 1920. He enlisted in the Army and served with 9th Field Squadron, Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe during the Second World War. His unit near the front lines was accidentally bombed by American bombers. Len was buried and dug out by Carl Perrin. He was wounded on August 14, 1944. He was a member of the Saskatoon Main Branch and Calgary North Branch for many years. Len passed away in 2012. NELSON, Stanley Thomas WWII Stanley was born in 1920 in Hendon, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army and he was a TPR with the 1st Hussars during the Second World War. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion in Rose Valley, SK. Stanley passed away in 2000 and is buried in the Rose Valley Cemetery in Rose Valley.
