The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 193 McCALL, James WWII James was born in Frobisher in March 1915. He took public school and high school in Frobisher. He married Velma O’Brien in 1940 and in 1941, left Frobisher for Broomhead. In 1942, he went into the Canadian Army and took training at Maple Creek. He instructed for a while in the centre before going east Petawawa and had a course in the Signal Corps at Kingston, ON. He was posted overseas in 1943 going over on the “Empress of Japan” renamed the “Empress of Scotland”. He landed at Grenoch, Scotland near Glasgow. He was in the fourth division in Europe seeing France, Belgium, Germany and Holland during the Second World War. He went home after the war on the “Queen Elizabeth” and landed in New York. He received his discharge in Regina in 1946 and worked for a year and a half for the Estevan School Division as a foreman. He then bought the store at the airport from G. Symons in 1948 and ran the business until 1962. In 1962, he was employed by the Department of Transport to work in the weather office. He has a family of two girls, Sharon and Colleen. James resides in Estevan. McCOOL, Charles “Charlie” WWI Charlie was born in Oscoda, Michigan, USA on June 1, 1891. The Wesley hockey team was started as a hockey club for the boys of St. Thomas Wesley Church. Under Charlie’s guidance, they represented the City of Saskatoon in the juvenile and junior divisions from 1924 to 1953. The Wesley Juniors were Western Canadian finalists in 1931 and 1935, and went on to play in the 1931 Memorial Cup. McCool served many years on the executive of the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association and was also actively involved in support of the Saskatoon Hilltops Football Club in the 1930s. He served with the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1915 to 1918. McCORMACK, John Edward WWII John was born on July 6, 1917. His parents operated the Five & Dime store in Estevan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where he became Squadron Leader during the Second World War. He was a Lawyer in Estevan and a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan. He was the MLA of Souris-Estevan from 1948 to 1953. In the spring of 1953, he was killed in a car crash in Regina after having dinner with the Lt Gov. of Saskatchewan. His new bride Marion Outhwaite of Oxbow survived the crash.
