The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 175 KOVAR, Alexander “Alex” WWII Alexander was born in Slovakia on May 17, 1926. In 1929, the Kovar family immigrated to Canada. After one week, aboard a ship, they arrived in Quebec then by train to North Battleford. They purchased land in Mount Hope district where Alex began school. More land was purchased in Metropole. He continued his education until he joined the Canadian Army (with the help of a few little white lies) in 1942. Following base training in Dundern and specialized commando training in Nanaimo he served in war zones in countries along the English Channel going north with VIII RECEE 14th Canadian Hussars 2nd Division, ending in Germany at the end of the war he returned home. He served in the Battle of Normandy, France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and France during the Second World War. He was awarded the 1939-1945 Star, France and Germany Star, Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, War Medal 1939-1945 and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. He has been a member of the Legion Battleford Branch 9 for 32 years. KOZAKEWICH, Walter WWII Walter was born in Sokal, Ukraine in 1920. He moved to Canada in 1926. He joined the Army in 1944 and trained in Truro, Nova Scotia and Vernon, British Columbia during the Second World War. He went overseas until the war ended and served with the Military Police in Holland for two years. KYLE, Charlie WWII Charlie was born in 1920. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at the age of eighteen and gave his life for his country at the age of 23 in France during the Second World War on June 13, 1943. His parents were married on September 3, 1933, Howard David Lyle and Daisy Margaret Ward in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His siblings were Annie (Ann), Mary, Bill (who passed away in his early teens with Typhoid fever), Ruth, Betty (who passed away on December 30, 1943), Andrew, Elma, Kathleen, Robert (Bob), Beth, Edward and Keith. Since the family left Frobisher, three more brothers were born: Howard David (passed away one year after birth), Gerald Leslie and James Henry.
