The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 165 JUMP, Ernest Frank WWI Ernest was born in Pontesbury, Shropshire, England on December 19, 1892. He enlisted in the Army in Estevan on January 4, 1915 and served with the 46th Battalion and 28th Battalion during the First World War. He was put with the 28th Battalion on January 29, 1916. He was reported missing on June 6, 1916 and presumed dead. He was officially recorded dead on June 20, 1917 for official purposes. He sailed out of Montreal in May 1915 and arrived in England on September 13, 1915. KARTUSCH, Michael “Mike” C. M. Mike was born on September 20, 1907 in Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan. His involvement with youth hockey teams began while he was in his early twenties. He was a Cadet Instructor with the Canadian Air/Army Cadets. Locally, he organized, coached, and administered the city Parks Hockey League. Mike was also an administrator, coach, and president of the Senior Men’s Inter-City Softball League and the Men’s and Women’s Inter-Parochial League. Mike joined the Regina Pats organization in 1948, which continued until 1978 when he retired as chairman of the board of directors of the Saskatchewan Amateur Junior Hockey League. Mike was awarded the Order of Canada in 1974 and the Queen’s Jubilee Medal in 1977. KEATING, Shane PEACETIME Shane was born on December 17, 1975 in Estevan, Saskatchewan and raised in Dalmeny and Saskatoon. Corporal Keating was stationed in Shilo, Manitoba and was a member of the North Saskatchewan Regiment from June 2, 1993 to September 1, 1997. He joined the regular forces on September 1, 1997 as a member of the 2nd Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry and toured twice in Bosnia from 2000 to 2001 and in 2003. He was stationed in Afghanistan since August 1, 2006. He died serving his country in Afghanistan on September 18, 2006, while handing out school supplies, toys, balls and biscuts to local children. Cpl Keating and three other soldiers were killed by a suicide bicycle bomb attack in the Panjwaii district. A man travelling on a bicycle donated his bomb near Canadian troops and several others were injured, including children.
