The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 153 HUNTER (COPLAND), Margaret Elizabeth NORTH-WEST REBELLION Margaret Copland was born in Scotland in 1849. She trained as a nurse and then married William Hunter in 1870. In 1871 they emigrated to Ontario, and then went west to the village of Saskatoon, District of Saskatchewan, NWT, in 1883. Thomas Copland, her brother, chose a homestead next to the river and Margaret and her husband homesteaded in Llewellyn community, six miles to the northeast. With the outbreak of the Metis insurrection in 1885, General Middleton utilized the Copland homestead as the encampment grounds for the troops. Wounded from both sides were returned to this encampment area, and Margaret provided her nursing skills and medical care until hostilities ceased, after which she returned to the Llewellyn homestead. Margaret died in 1940 in Saskatoon, SK. HUNTER, William “Bill” WWII Bill was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on May 5, 1920. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1940 to 1944. While growing up in Saskatoon in the 1930s, he founded the Saskatoon Dukes Football Club, the forerunner of the Hilltops. After attending Notre Dame College at Wilcox, he moved to North Battleford and became involved with juvenile hockey and women’s softball. Arriving in Regina, Bill began his involvement with the Regina Caps as owner, general manager, and coach. This was followed by a similar position with the Saskatoon Quakers. Bill has received many honours, including his induction into the Notre Dame, Saskatoon, Edmonton, and Alberta Sports Halls of Fame. In 2001, Bill was honoured with his induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. HUNTLEY, Sydney Lenard WWI Sydney was born in London, England on June 7, 1894. Before enlisting in Regina, Saskatchewan on June 22, 1915, he had been working as a farmhand. He served with the 46th and 58th Battalion during the First World War. He died on November 21, 1916 after receiving a gunshot wound to the abdomen while fighting at Regina Trench near the village of Le Sars. He is buried at Sainte-Marie Cemetery in Le Havre, France.
