The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 141 HENDRICKSON, Hjalmar Harold WWII Hjalmar was born in Kinistino, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Army with the South Saskatchewan Regiment and served in Europe, the Netherlands Liberation. He was in communications, more specially a walkie-talkie and Morse Code Professional. He was devastated emotionally by the number of friends in his unit who died trying to protect him because without communications the unit was essentially isolated and lost. He served his country for three years during the Second World War. HERLEN, Ernest “Ossie” WWII Ernest was born in Star City, Saskatchewan on November 26, 1918. He was an excellent boxer and a great sportsman of the late 1930s. He was raised in Saskatoon and started to box at the age of fifteen. Of his 33 fights, Ernest won 12 by decision, 12 by knockouts and three by total knockouts. He lost five by decision and fought to one draw. In his nine years of boxing he was never knocked out. He was the Saskatchewan lightweight champion in 1937 and in 1938 was a Saskatchewan champion again, only this time in the welterweight class. He was also the Welterweight Dominion Champion in Winnipeg the same year. Ernest was named vice-president of the Golden Gloves Amateur Boxing Club for 1937 to 1938. He served in the Royal Canadian Air Force from 1939 to 1944. After entering the Royal Canadian Air Force, he carried on boxing and took the Toronto Garrison Championship in 1940. HETHERINGTON, Thomas Walter WWI Thomas was born on December 26, 1892 in Penrith, Cumberland, England. He travelled from Lumsden, SK where he was an accountant to Winnipeg, Manitoba to enlist in the Army on Christmas Eve of 1914. He served in France with the 34th Fort Garry Horse and 10th Battalion during the First World War. Private Hetherington was killed in action on May 21, 1915 during the Battle of Festubert in France. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Vimy Ridge Memorial.
