The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 137 HARTLEY, George Richard WWII George was born in Estevan on March 2, 1916 to Alfred and Elsie (Chammey). During the Second World War, in 1939, George volunteered for service in the Army. He was the second man in Saskatchewan to volunteer and served with the Saskatoon Light Infantry from 1939 to 1945. He fought in the battles of Ortona, Sicily, mainland Italy and the liberation of Rotterdam, Holland earning the rank of Sergeant. During the war, on August 4, 1943, he married Joan Winnifred Piper in Wadhurst, Sussex, England. Their son Paul was born. When George was ready to return to Canada, Joan wanted to stay with her parents, so they divorced and he returned alone. On September 17, 1947, he married Evelyn Mary McWirter in Regina. They had two girls, Dolores Dianne and Deborah Elizabeth. They moved around to Carnduff, Glen Ewen and Oxbow before going to Frobisher, then Bienfait and finally retiring in Estevan. George passed away on September 3, 1986. HARVEY, Martin J. WWII Martin served with the Royal Canadian Air Force out of Gander, Newfoundland during the Second World War. He lived in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. HASSARD, Clarence WWI Clarence was born on June 11, 1896 in Aberdeen, South Dakota, USA and moved to Alameda as a four-year-old. He was well known around as a great ball player. He took his schooling there and finished just in time to get ready to become involved in the First Great War. In the fall of 1915, he enlisted in “C” Company of the 152nd Battalion, was quartered that winter in the Empire Hotel in Estevan. He moved in and joined to A, B, and D Companies at Weyburn waiting for orders to move to Camp Hughes (Shilo) or go overseas. He was moved to Camp Hughes then about a month later left for overseas and soon after that was sent to the 5th Battalion (Saskatchewan Battalion) and served with them for the rest of the war. After three years of absence he finally arrived back in Alameda. The government opened a large tract of land at Chelan, SK exclusively for ex-soldiers and Clarence took some land to farm. He married Lillian Pegg. Clarence passed away in 1981.
