The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 125 GRIFFITHS, Ernest Wynne “Joe” WWI Joe was born in Port Talbot, Wales on May 10, 1885. He served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force from 1916 to 1918. For 32 years, 1919 to 1951, while working at the University of Saskatchewan, Joe Griffiths made a great impact on athletics. He coached high school and university track and swim teams, and was the Canadian Olympic team coach in both these sports in the 1936 and 1948 Olympics. Joe was a life member of the Royal Life Saving Society, Saskatoon’s Citizen of the Year, and he received the coveted honour award from the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education and Recreation in 1948. GUTHERIDGE, Stanley “Hub” WWII Stanley was born in London, England on September 19, 1905. He first played basketball in the Moose Jaw YMCA around 1919 at the age of fourteen. He took part in the Y’s house league, then in the men’s city league, and later in inter-city competition with Regina. He served with the Canadian Armed Forces from 1942 to 1946. In 1946, he was appointed Supervisor of Physical Education for the Moose Jaw Public School Board. In this capacity, he organized and administered all basketball for elementary and secondary schools, and could be given credit for much of the success of the game of basketball in Moose Jaw. HALE, George Leslie WWI George was born in Ontario on September 7, 1896 and moved to the Frobisher Area in 1900 with his parents and siblings. The family moves to the Stoughton area a few years later. He joined the Army on August 4, 1915 at Arcola. He served in Continental Europe during the First World War as a sniper with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 42nd Battalion. George was killed in action on November 3, 1917 in France.
