The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 111 GEDAK, Joseph Isador WWII Isador was born in Estevan in 1922. He served with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War as a Pilot Officer attached to the #90 Royal Air Force Squadron. The squadron flew 4,613 operational sorties for bomber command during the war and lost 86 aircrafts. Pilot Officer Gedak was killed in action in Duisberg, Germany on May 13, 1943. Joseph and crew left Ridgwell, England Airfield at 00.18 hours. His Stirling aircraft failed to return from night operations in Duisberg. He has no known grave and his name is inscribed on the Runnymede Memorial in Surrey, England. Joseph was the son of Anton and Marianna Gedak, natives of Russia and Romania who moved to Estevan in 1912. Gedak Lake in northern Saskatchewan was named in his honour. He was 21 years old. GEDAK, Norman Anthony WWII Norman was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan on February 24, 1918. He enlisted in Regina, SK on February 26, 1941 with the 14th Armoured Corp 5th Division. In March 1941, he was sent to Kitchener, ON for basic training where he was trained as a Turner (Machinist). On August 13, 1943, he left from Halifax for overseas. He served in Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Continental Europe with the RCASC during the Second World War. He returned to Canada on December 7, 1945. He received the Star of France, the Star of Germany Medals and the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp. He married Helen McManus on February 23, 1941. They had four children: Gary, Thomas, Catherine and Michael. Norman passed away on April 20, 1975 at Estevan and is buried at Estevan City Cemetery in the Veterans plot. GEIGER, Frank Frank was the son of Joe and Margaret Geiger, who in 1914 arrived in Frobisher from South Qu’Appelle with the family of thirteen children: Jack, Ida, Alex, Barbara, Annie, Tony, Matt, Margaret, Frank, Joe, Jean and Ralph. All the boys worked on the railroad at some time. Following the death of their mother, Frank married Mrs. Hildebrand of Regina who had three children: Frances, John and Frank.
