Many of them made the supreme sacrifice and this is our way of assuring they are remembered. Many of them came home forever changed. All who came back built our Province and Country with the same dedication and effort they gave while serving our Country in time of war and peace. LEST WE FORGET 5 NEW to this book are two distinct symbols. The purpose of these symbols is to recognize individuals for their culture and their contribution to sport. The Eagle Feather You will find the Eagle Feather throughout the book. This feather is placed within the bio of a Veteran to indicate their Indigenous background. The Eagle feather is a special connection to the Creator. It represents strength, courage, freedom, honesty. As the eagle flies higher and sees better than any other bird, it brings perspective of all creation. Many do not realize the contribution that the Indigenous people made to our country in the time of conflict. Early days and even today, Indigenous people have not necessarily been treated as equals. Yet, many of them participated within the military to defend our country without question putting aside their indifferences. The Muskeg Lake Veterans story is a prime example of this. “We are all walking the same direction, it is time we all walk the same path.” - Philip Ledoux, Mistawasis First Nation, Canadian Army Veteran Connection with Sport and the Military You will find this logo throughout the book. Sport and the Military have a unique bond. Our national anthem is sung before all major sporting events and often at local amateur events. You often will see a fly-over before the start of a ‘Rider’ game. This fly-over is done by the Snowbirds based out of Moose Jaw. It is done to honour this special bond that Sport plays within the lives our military and our civilian way of life. Sport is about teamwork. There is no better team outside of our military. Soldier On is a Canadian Forces Moral and Welfare Services Initiative that is geared towards supporting its members to overcome physical and mental health injuries sustained during conflict. Sport is the gateway to healing. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is a great honour. These people sacrificed everything for their country. They left behind their families and way of life to serve. Whether it was before they left or after they came back they made an impression on local sports. Close to 60 individuals are included in this book, but many others have been inducted into the Hall as a member of a team. For this we honour them.

The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 11 WHAT THE HECK DOES THE LEGION DO? Veterans Remembrance Community First of all, we want you to know that at the Royal Canadian Legion, veterans are Canadian Armed and Allied Forces personnel and RCMP who have served and are serving. Next, we want you to know that, by observing the Legion’s three pillars—Veterans, Remembrance, Community—Saskatchewan Command, as the Saskatchewan arm of the Legion, is an active presence in communities across the province. But how, you ask? Well, read on, to discover how the head office in Regina works closely with its Executive Council, 171 branches around the province, and over 10,000 members to support Veterans, Remembrance and Community. Veterans Veterans requiring support of any kind can contact their local Legion branch in confidentiality which will put them in contact with a branch service officer. Veterans can also contact the Provincial Service Officer at 306-525-8739 or toll-free at 1-866-471-8387. Service officers conduct needs assessments and based on the results, develop a plan for the veteran to move forward which often includes a community and team effort of businesses, health professionals and other service organizations. A plan could include the service officer assisting the veteran to fill out paperwork from Veterans Affairs Canada, the service officer acquiring furniture for the veteran donated by local businesses, and the service officer connecting the veteran to health professionals. Here are some of our programs that your donations go toward so that veterans receive the care, benefits and support that is the mandate of the Legion. Leave the Streets Behind – for homeless and near-homeless veterans. Paws for Veterans – matches service dogs to qualifying veterans suffering from operational stress injuries (OSIs) such as anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 13 Discovering the Power in Me – In partnership with Wounded Warriors Weekend Foundation and the Pacific Institute, Saskatchewan Command offers this seminar for Saskatchewan veterans and their families, offering tools to deal with operational stress injuries (OSIs). Wounded Warriors Weekend – For veterans, reservists and first responders suffering from OSIs, and their families to engage in leisurely indoor and outdoor activities while at the same time receiving support from health professionals. OSI-CAN (Operational Stress Injury Canada) – With support from the Canadian Mental Health Association and Saskatchewan Command, OSI-CAN offers a weekly or monthly support group in the communities of Regina, Weyburn, Saskatoon and Prince Albert to veterans, first responders and Correctional Service workers. It also offers access to equine therapy and service dogs. Funeral and Burial – The Royal Canadian Legion delivers the Veterans Affairs Funeral and Burial Program which provides funeral, burial and grave marking benefits for eligible Canadian and Allied veterans. Its mission is to ensure that no veteran is denied a dignified funeral and burial as well as a military gravestone because of insufficient funds. Remembrance Poppy Campaign – The Royal Canadian Legion, since its inception in 1926, has become known for its annual organization of November 11th Remembrance Day services and events, held in many communities across Canada to honour veterans. Along with Remembrance Day is the poppy campaign, which always runs from the last Friday in October through to Nov. 11— this period marks the time when The Royal Canadian Legion distributes poppies and encourages the public to wear them as a reminder of the service given by our veterans. Poster and Literary Contests – Every year, Legion branches offer local schools the opportunity for their students to submit entries in the form of a poster, poem or essay with veterans as the theme. The contests start at the branch level in October, with winning submissions moving up the Legion ladder until finally, 14 entries from students in Saskatchewan are sent to Dominion Command in Ottawa for judging. At this highest level, the winning entries are displayed at the Canadian War Museum from July 1 to May 1 of the following year.
