The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 83 BALAAM, Sidney WWI Sidney was born in 1878 in Sapiston, Suffolk, England. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force, 16th Regiment on April 14, 1916. He was in France by June 10th, and he built pontoon bridges over waterways, dismantled unexploded enemy shells, trained as a detonator, etc. After being shell shocked, gassed and severely wounded, he was placed in Buxton, England hospital. He received his discharge on December 31, 1918. He received the 1914-1918 British War Medal and the Victory Medal of The Great War For Civilization 1914-1918. Sidney passed away on September 26, 1960. BALABERDA, Thomas Ferdinent WWII Thomas was born in 1922 in Plainview, SK. He enlisted with the 3rd Battalion, Irish Fusiliers and served for a total of 37 months in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe as an infantry soldier and shoemaker group “C”. He was awarded the France and Germany Star and the 1939-1945 Star. Thomas was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Pierceland Branch 178. He passed away in 1985. BALL, Jacob Max WWII Jacob was born in 1918 in Holdfast, SK. He enlisted in the Army on February 19, 1942 and embarked for overseas on January 10, 1945. He returned to Canada on February 3, 1946 and was discharged on March 21, 1946. He served with the Kings Own Rifles of Canada as a Rifleman, was a Private in the Midland Regiment and Lake Superior Regiment in Canada, Britain and Northwest Europe during the Second World War. Jacob also took part in the chemical warfare agent tests in Suffield, Alberta Experimental Station where military personnel participated in many hazardous and secret trials. The collective service of all these participants was significant and while their efforts were unknown in the past, their duty was, by every measure, exceptional, and was gratefully recognized by the Government of Canada on February 19, 2004. Jacob passed away in 1995.
