The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 79 AUCHSTAETTER, Marno Carl WWII Marno joined the Army in November 1941 and served until February 1946. He served in Canada, United Kingdom, Central Mediterranean, and Continental Europe. He was awarded the France & Germany Star, Defence Medal, and the Canadian Volunteer Medal & Clasp. He joined The Royal Canadian Legion, Pelly Branch 65 in 1947 until 1985 when he received Life Membership. He worked as Pelly Postmaster for twenty years. Marno passed away on February 26, 1987 and is interred in Kandahar Cemetery, Kandahar, SK. AUSTIN, William WWII William was born in 1899 in Yorkton, SK. He enlisted with the Canadian Army and served with the Regina Princess Pats in the United Kingdom, Continental Europe and the Central Mediterranean Area. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Birch Hills Branch 122 for thirty-three years. William passed away in 1979. BACHORCIK, Paul WWII Paul was born in 1924 in Czechoslovakia, coming to Canada with his parents, Stephen and Augusta Bachorcik, at four years of age. Paul joined the Royal Canadian Navy in May 1943, enlisting at HMCS Queen in Regina and served his basic training there until July 11, 1943. He became a gunner and served on several HMCS ships: Naden, Givanchy III, Niobe, Excellent, Pereguine and on a landing craft (LCI) #302 from February 29 to September 4, 1944. Paul participated in the D-Day landing at Normandy in France on June 6, 1944. In general, Paul spent long days at sea, helping others with the cooking and keeping the ship in order. He returned to Macoun in the fall of 1945 and like many of the returning service men, suffered from post-traumatic stress and had difficulty adjusting to civilian life. In 1946, Paul married Doreen Dawson from Halbrite, a teacher at McGregor School, and they had six children. They spent the early years of their marriage in British Columbia before returning to the family farm to build a new home.
