The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 77 ARMSTRONG, Gerald Gordon WWII Gerald was born at Macoun, SK on June 19, 1918, son of Gordon William and Martha Henrietta Armstrong, owners of the Armstrong & Co. General Store until 1930. After completing school in Macoun in 1935, Gerald worked with the Royal Bank of Canada in Oxbow, Assiniboia, Craik, Wilkie and Weyburn, SK. He joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1940, receiving his wings shortly thereafter. In May 1941, Flight Sergeant Gerald Armstrong was posted to England and attached to the Royal Air Force bomber squadron flying Wellington Bombers. On November 17, 1941, Gerald’s plane went down into the North Sea off the east coast of England while returning from operations. He is buried in Aylesham Cemetery, Kent, England. Gerald Lake, near Ile-A-La-Crosse in northern Saskatchewan, is named after him. ARMSTRONG, Kenneth Algernon WWII Kenneth was born on October 2, 1914, the first child of Gordon and Martha Armstrong. After completing elementary and high school, he was employed by McBrides Ltd in Macoun, Midale, Moose Jaw, Estevan and Weyburn, managing the Macoun store in 1941. He married Norma Steele of Macoun on July 10, 1940 and together, they had four children. On November 11, 1941 Kenneth enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and was stationed in Toronto, St. Thomas (Ontario), Winnipeg and Montreal. He was discharged in June 1945 and went back home to Macoun to farm. In the fall of 1950, Kenneth and his family moved to Midale to operate a store with his brother, Mel. He operated the store until 1973 when he closed the store and returned to farming. ARNASON, Oli B. WWII Oli was born in 1918 on a farm near Leslie, SK. As a young man he joined the Army and was sent to England to take his training as a machine gunner. While he was in England he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He served in England, Belgium and Italy. Oli was killed in action while serving in Italy in 1944.
