The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 435 FRIETMAN, Wilhelmina Johanna “Miep” Wilhelmina was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands. She met her husband Eric Walter on a blind date in Rotterdam where Eric’s communications unit was sent to do repairs. Despite the language barrier, they managed to get acquainted and fell in love. Miep was only 18 years old and her father would not allow her to marry; especially to a soldier with no job guarantee when he returned to Canada. The couple made the best of a two-year long-distance relationship until Miep was finally able to cross the ocean aboard the Waterman on June 17, 1947. After docking in Montreal on June 25, 1947, Miep boarded the train for Saskatoon where Eric eagerly awaited her arrival. They were married five days later on July 5, 1947 in a small Anglican Church in Saskatoon. Miep and Eric were married for 62 years and they raised six children. Eric passed away in 2009. Miep resides in Wynyard, SK. LINCOLN (TILLYER), Dorothy May Sylvia Gorman “Dolly” Dorothy was born in Bruforth, Newburg in the United Kingdom. She married Walter Lincoln in Farnbourg, UK in 1941. Dorothy left Liverpool in 1944 with two children Helen, age three and Yvonne, age eighteen months and was pregnant with third child, John. Due to the pregnancy, Dolly was sea sick and unable to leave her bed to care for her children. They were left in the care of the ships staff the whole journey to Halifax. Once the ship docked, the nausea ceased then they were able to board a train to continue the journey to Saskatchewan. After arriving to her new home at Wawota, SK and getting settled, she was amazed at what the general stores had in stock, like canned goods, produce and dairy as living in England, everything had been rationed during the war. She found the winters cold at first but soon adjusted to life on the farm and Canada. MILLS (DALLAWAY), Joyce Mary Joyce was born in Yorkshire, England. She married Robert Mills, a L.A.C. in the Royal Canadian Air Force, in Sowerby, Thirsk in 1944. She left Liverpool with her two children on board the Empire Brent and arrived in Halifax, where she took a train to Craik, Saskatchewan. She has been back to England quite a lot with her husband and their children. She now has four children, two boys and two girls, which she is grateful for. She loves Canada and would not trade it for the world. Her husband, Robert, passed away on May 19, 2000.
