The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 429 WELLBELOVE, John Arthur WWII John was born in Eston, SK in 1919. He enlisted in the Army and was a CANLOAN Officer serving with the 1st Battalion, Border Regiment, Royal Canadian Infantry Corps. He was attached to the glider section of the British Airborne Division. Lt. John Wellbelove perished on September 21, 1944 in the ill-fated attack on Arnhem Ridge. As observed by Adjacent British Platoon Commander, A. Wilson: “He kept firing his Sten until he was over run. You can’t do any more than that. God knows how many Germans he killed before they got him.” His medals include the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and Clasp, the 1939-1945 Star, the France and Germany Star, and the War Medal 1939-1945. WHEELER, William Louis “Bill” WWII Bill was born July 1, 1920, the sixth child of Samuel and Rosa (Frank), on the farm in the View Hill District in the Benson RM north of Estevan, SK. He lived there for twenty years until he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force at Yorkton in 1941. He trained in Neepawa, MB and Suffield Air Base, AB. He was sent to Gander, NL and was a heavy equipment operator at the Air Base. He married Bessie Edwards on December 24, 1944. Bill had a one-month furlough in 1945, so with his new bride, they travelled from Montreal to Estevan, SK where Bess stayed with Bill’s parents. Bill returned to Dartmouth Air Base in Nova Scotia until he was discharged in 1946. He returned to Saskatchewan to start his new life on the prairies. In 1958 he bought land in the Willmar area. He and Bessie had six children. Bill passed away on December 25, 1994 and is buried in the Arcola Cemetery. WHITE, William Henry WWII William was born in Meldrum, MB in 1901. He received his education at Kisbey and Moose Jaw, SK and had been a banker and a Rawleigh salesman before enlisting in the Royal Canadian Air Force at Regina in 1941. He served as an Aircraftman 1 (RCAF Accounting Clerk) during the Second World War. William died of a fractured skull in 1942 while on strength with No. 2 Initial Training School at Regina. He died “…an accidental death at the Arcadia dance hall….” He was the son of John Weslet and Ellen Hughes (Samways) White. William was married to Clara May (Anderson) and they had two children: Mariana and Robert. He is buried in the Carnduff, SK Cemetery.
