The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 401 SCHINDEL, Arthur Theodore WWII Arthur was born on July 18, 1922 in Morse, SK to Louis and Sophie Schindel. He grew up on the farm at Morse and Macoun, SK. Arthur joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in the latter years of the Second World War and after discharge, attended Normal School in Moose Jaw, SK. Arthur married Merle Tripps on August 16, 1947 at Penzance, SK. During their life together, they lived in Houghton, Girvin and Craik where they built their family home and raised their children. Arthur continued his education and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Saskatchewan in 1961. He was a caring, dedicated teacher and principal and an active volunteer for many community projects and events. Merle passed away in 1971 and Arthur married Clara Hoogeven on July 17, 1973. Upon his retirement in 1977, he taught adult upgrading in several communities. He and Clara moved to Regina in 1988 where he resided until his passing at Pasqua Hospital in 2008. SCHINDEL, Oscar WWII Oscar was the son of Sophie and Louis Schindel and was born in Morse, SK on May 28, 1919. He moved with his family to Macoun, SK in 1929. Their final farm location was north-east of Macoun and close to town. Oscar joined the Army, trained in Kingston, Ontario and served for two and a half years in the RCEME unit as an Electrician. He was shipped overseas and was stationed in England. Prior to going to war, on December 23, 1942, Oscar married Lorraine Littlejohn. Together they had five children, two daughters and three sons. Oscar became a teacher and taught in Macoun for many years, eventually becoming the principal of Macoun School. Oscar passed away on April 2, 2013. SCHINDEL, Paul WWII Paul is the son of Sophie and Louis Schindel and was born at Morse, Saskatchewan, moving with his family to Macoun in 1929. He joined the Navy in 1944. An Officer had come to Macoun School and asked all those who were over the age of eighteen to stand, and they would be joining the Army. Books were left and they boarded a bus to Regina but once there, Paul joined the Navy HMCS Queen instead. He went for basic training in Montreal then off to Halifax on the destroyer in the North Atlantic, fighting the Germans. He also went to Scotland. On his return to Halifax, they encountered a storm with thirty-foot waves. Paul was discharged in the fall of 1945, and went home to take over farming. He married Agnes Tysseland and lived in Macoun, SK before finally settling in Estevan, SK. Paul and Agnes have three sons.
