He enlisted in the Army and served with the Fort Garry Horse Regiment in England and France. Sergeant Newton led a small group in advance to take a hill in France; he was one of few soldiers to return and was awarded the Military Medal for his leadership and efforts. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Big River Branch 136. Ivery passed away in 1971. NICHOLSON, Ernest WWI Ernest was born in 1886 in England. He enlisted in the Army during the First World War and served in Canada and England. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Abernethy Branch for fiftythree years. Ernest passed away in 1971. NICHOLSON, Robert WWII Robert was born in 1920 in Abernethy, SK. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served with the 405th Pathfinders. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Calgary Branch for fortyfive years. Robert passed away in 2003.
