The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 345 MUNRO, James Alan WWII James was born in Morden, MB in 1898. He was the brother of Hugh, William and George. He graduated from the University of Saskatchewan and Knox Presbyterian College. He became a Presbyterian Minister at Rosetown, SK. In September 1940, he enlisted in Chaplaincy Corps as Hon. Captain and served in 5th Division of Canadian Corps in France, Italy, Holland and Germany. He rose to Deputy Senior Protestant Chaplain, with rank of Hon. Major. He was awarded the Italy Star, France and Germany Star, and in September 1944, was in the battle at Fortuna Ridge, Italy for which he was awarded the Military Cross for outstanding faithfulness to duty while conducting burial services for five men and aiding in the evacuation of wounded under enemy shellfire. He was wounded while visiting forward troops near Lamone River. After the war, he became Superintendent of Western Missions of Presbyterian Church and Executive Director of the National Development Fund in Canada. In 1965, he became the Moderator of the 91st General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. James passed away in 1972. MUNRO, William McKeith WWI & WWII William was born in 1895 in Emmerson, MB. His brothers were Hugh, James and George. He attended Nutana Collegiate and studied to be a lawyer. In March 1916, he enlisted in the Army with the 196th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Western Universities Battalion). He landed in Liverpool in November 1916, joined the 96th Battalion in 1917 and was wounded at the Battle of Passchendaele on October 26 with a gunshot and shrapnel to the chest. He was wounded to the shoulder in September 1918 and was discharged in May 1919. After the war, he taught school in various Saskatchewan towns. William married and had three daughters. He enlisted in the Saskatoon Light Infantry in 1939 as Seargent and was part of the first contingent of Canadian Forces to land in England where he received a letter of welcome from King George VI on December 17, 1939. While in England, he suffered health problems relating to the First World War and was discharged in 1941. William passed away in December 1946 and is buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in Saskatoon, SK. MURRELL, Ray WWII Ray was born on May 8, 1922 in Darmoody, SK. He enlisted in the Canadian Army Active on April 15, 1941 and served in Canada, the United Kingdom and Continental Europe as a member of the 16/22 Saskatchewan Horse Regiment. That Regiment was disbanded and he was transferred to the Governor General’s Foot Guards until his discharge as Corporal on December 15, 1945. He was awarded the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal, 1939-1945 Star and the France and Germany Star. Ray passed away in 1994.
