GeoMemorial Program Saskatchewan's GeoMemorial Naming Program commemorates those who have given their lives in the service of their province or country by naming lakes, bays, rivers and islands in their honour. This includes members of the Canadian armed forces, peacekeepers, police officers, firefighters, conservation officers, emergency response workers, and persons of prominence who have made significant contributions to the province’s history and development. The Battle of Vimy Ridge is Canada’s most celebrated military victory. The four divisions of the Canadian Corps fought together for the 4rst time in the attack on Vimy Ridge from April 9-12, 1917 and succeeded in capturing it from the German army. More than 10,000 Canadians were killed or wounded in this battle. In commemoration of this battle, the Provincial Archives of Saskatchewan will release, “From the Prairies to the Trenches: Vimy, Passchendaele and Conscription” on April 12, 2017. It is the fourth video in a 4ve-part series and showcases 1917 events as experienced by Saskatchewan citizens at home and abroad, with an emphasis on the Canadian experience at Vimy Ridge in April 1917. This video will be shown at Government House, the Legislative Building and on the Archives’YouTube channel. The video series has been made possible, in part, by the Government of Canada. saskarchives.com
