LEST WE FORGET 29 After the Carievale Hall was built, it was decided to build a cairn. In 1953, Rene Hoefer hauled gravel, cement was obtained from A.W. Fuller, and a crew of volunteers poured a cement base for the cairn. In the summer of 1954, Mr. W. McElvenna, a stone mason from Oxbow, was hired to erect the cairn from field stone and mortar, at a cost of $125.00. A glass dome that had been used on top of a gas bowser was obtained from N. W Burke, and Allen Harrison did the wiring. In 1955, a bronze plaque was obtained and engraved with the names of all the soldiers who were killed in action in the two world wars. The plaque was fastened to the front of the cairn. In 1958, it was decided to add a flag pole. Through the very capable efforts of Frank Raynor, some pipe was obtained and he manufactured a pole that was erected. Legion members poured a cement base and the finished product became a reality.
