The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 251 KELLY, James “Jim” WWI, WWII & RCMP Jim was born on November 16, 1898 in England. He enlisted in the Army on February 3, 1914 and served in England until February 2, 1920. He went to Canada in 1925 and joined the RCMP and moved to the Arborfield, SK area in 1929 to homestead. He re-enlisted in the Army on June 3, 1943 and served as a Police Escort until March 19, 1946. Jim passed away on May 13, 1970. KENDALL, William BOER WAR William Kendall Jr. was born on August 20, 1879 in Cumbria, England to William and Jane Kendall. He joined the Army to serve in the Boer War at the age of twenty. Upon returning to England, he joined the 19th Hussars Cavalry Unit, serving two years in Africa before receiving his discharge in time to immigrate to Canada with his family in 1903. In 1904, William and his father and brothers filed homesteads in the Macrorie, SK area where William farmed until his passing in January 1962. He and his wife Margaret (Steele; 1874-1958) had no family. KENNETH, Ed WWII Ed was born in Parkman, SK in 1925. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1943 at the age of eighteen and was recruited as a Bomb Aimer with his 20/20 vision. His training took him to Lethbridge and Edmonton, AB, then Gimli, MB and then Trois-Rivières, QC during the Second World War. He was released from service on November 17, 1944. He lost two of his best friends in the war, Tom Wilson and Russell Dennis, and was haunted by their deaths. “Lest we forget” always held special meaning for Ed. He worked with Aerial Photographer Doug Chisholm who took commemorative photos of geographical areas in Northern Saskatchewan that were named after fallen war Veterans, and are on display on the Veterans’ Wall of Remembrance in The Legion Branch in Wawota, SK. Ed married Doris Armitage and they raised four daughters: Diane, Kim, Kristal and Deb. He was a member of The Royal Canadian Legion Wawota Branch 113 for forty-five years before he passed away in 2011.
