LEST WE FORGET 23 The Estevan Soldiers’ Tree Dedicated September 10, 2016 Lester Hinzman, from Estevan, had an idea: to pay tribute to Canada’s contributions to the Second World War by transforming a 7400-lb cottonwood tree into images depicting World War II. The idea became reality as artist Darren Jones took wholeheartedly to the task along with committee members Lane Hanson, Marie Calder, Rob Rooks, Geoff Thiessen and Frosty Forrest, and dozens of other individuals and organizations. In October 2015, Jones, as a sculptor and directional driller, began carving the images using a chain saw. Continued on Page 25 Photos by Angela Clements Photography
