The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 237 HURSH, Sherman WWII Sherman was born on April 17, 1916 to Eugene and Alice Marie Hursh of Macoun, SK. After completing school, Sherman farmed and, like many young men of the 1930’s, travelled to find work. He later found employment as a clerk for the Benson Rural Municipality. On June 14, 1941, Sherman married Isobel Mary Latimer of Benson, SK with whom he had three children. Sherman enlisted in the Canadian Provost Corps in Regina, SK on June 6, 1942 and in January 1943, he transferred to the Armoured Corps and was posted to Camp Borden, ON. In 1943, Sherman served as a Wireless Operator in Italy with the 711 Hussars and 14th Canadian Armoured Regiment (Calgary Tanks). He served in Belgium and Holland as well. He was later transferred to the RECCE, his last posting before returning home when the war ended. He disembarked at Swift Current, SK in December 1945. Sherman continued to work with Co-Ops in various capacities over the years. He passed away on October 26, 2006 in Edmonton, AB at the age of ninety. IRELAND, Frederick Mervin “Merv” WWII Merv was born on February 18, 1908 in London, England. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force with 423rd Squadron in 1941. He trained to be an airplane mechanic and served in Ireland until his discharge in 1945. He received a War Service badge, “General Service Class”. His brother Leslie Gilbert Ireland was also in the Air Force. Merv passed away on November 3, 1979. JACOBSON, Leonard WWII Leonard was born in 1917. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force and served in England during the Second World War. He returned home after the war to farm and raise a family. Leonard passed away in 2002.
