The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatchewan Command LEST WE FORGET 169 FITCHELL (LOW), Doris Lilian “Betty” WWII Betty was born in South Merstham, Surrey, England on March 24, 1923. She enlisted on June 16, 1943 and served in England with Unit WRNS. Betty married George Fitchell on November 6, 1943 in England. She received her discharge on August 13, 1945 and travelled to Canada as a War Bride with her baby daughter on the ship Aquitania, landing in Halifax, NS on July 27, 1946, then on to Saskatoon, SK. George arrived in Saskatoon, SK about a month later and in the next few years, they welcomed a son and a second daughter. It would be twenty-five years before they made their first return trip to England to visit family and friends. Betty also was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatoon Branch 63. She passed away on February 1, 2002 in Saskatoon. FITCHELL, George Albert “Fitch” WWII George was born in Tessier, SK on August 25, 1918. He enlisted on December 13, 1941 and served as a Sapper with Royal Canadian Engineers in Canada, England, France and Holland under the rank of Corporal. Fitch married Betty Low in England on November 6, 1943. He received his discharge on June 22, 1946 and returned home to Saskatoon in August 1946. George and Betty raised one son and two daughters. He was a Life Member of The Royal Canadian Legion Saskatoon Branch 63 where he served as Sergeant-at-Arms for twenty years. George passed away on February 14, 1991 in Saskatoon. FLODING, Harry WWII Harry was the son of Willie and Clara, born on the farm ten miles outside of Midale, SK on March 27, 1917. Harry started farming with his father at a young age like most farm children. He attended Bromstad School and graduated from grade twelve in Midale. Harry trained as a Teacher and taught in Steelman, SK before joining the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942 where he trained to be an Air Frame Mechanic. In October 1943, he married Ruth Waldbauer, returned to the farm and bought what was called the “Barlow Estate” where he continued to farm for many years. Harry was extremely active, serving as a Municipal Councillor and later as Director of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities. He also was a member of many boards such as the Midale Hospital Board and the Canada Wheat Council. Ruth and Harry had three daughters who attended school in Macoun, SK. Doris Floding, a 1964 graduate of Macoun School is one of Harry’s daughters.
